The Abyssinian is one of the most popular shorthair cat breeds in the United States. Distinguished by its trademark almond-shaped eyes, big ears, and muscular body, the Abyssinian will also often boast a tawny coat and may sometimes have tabby markings on the head, tail, or paws.
Abyssinians, or Abys as they're sometimes fondly referred to, are known for being very friendly and loyal. However, the Aby is not a lap cat. It is curious, playful, and very active. Abyssinians love heights and they often need a lot of activity and stimulation. They're busy cats, so providing them with toys, and things to climb will not only keep them off your furniture, but will also keep them happy.
The Abyssinian is social, and when you combine this with its curiosity, you'll find you often get a cat that likes to follow you around the house, sit on your newspaper, get into your laundry, and even play with the kids! That said, Abyssinians tend to bond more closely with adults and older children. If you are going to be away from the house a lot, it's recommended to get two Abyssinians or have another feline companion.
One of the oldest known breeds, the Abyssinian has a controversial history. Legend has it that a British soldier brought a little kitten named Zula back from Egypt and bred her with an English tabby, making Zula the mother of all Abyssinians. However, according to the International Cat Fanciers' Association, the Abyssinian was most probably introduced into England from parts of India and Southeast Asia.
