The darling Affenpinscher may be best known for its cute, monkey face, but this sweet dog is also known for the monkey streak in its behavior. Affenpinschers are playful, curious, and sometimes even a little bossy.

Despites its small size, the Affenpinscher likes to play big and can exhibit a bit of a stubborn streak. Possessive of toys and treats, the Affenpinscher doesn’t always thrive amongst a pack or group of other dogs. So, if you’re planning on bringing an Affen as they’re sometimes called, into a multi-animal household, it’s important to introduce them at a young age.

The Affenpinscher is selective about its favorite humans or preferred family members. Wary of strangers and very loyal to its owners, your Affen, though too tiny to do any real damage, can go a little wild when guests come to your door.

When training an Affenpinscher, be gentle because of their small stature, but firm enough to combat their stubborn nature. Using rewards and positive reinforcement are good tactics that work well with these saucy little fellows.

The Affenpinscher’s coat is bristly, giving it a really spunky look and it comes in black, gray, silver, black and tan, and red. The hair around the eyes should be cut regularly or brushed back to prevent it from bothering the dog. Normally, the ears are cropped and the tails are docked, but this is often done by the breeder.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for heart murmurs, hyperthyroidism, Legg-Perthes, patellar luxation and kidney problems.
