The African Grey, like its name suggests, is almost completely grey in color, but will display touches of white with some subspecies also having reddish tails. This large and intelligent bird will often wear a white mask of feathers around the eyes.

The two most popular pet species of the African Grey are the Congo African Grey, or “CAG” for short, and the Timneh African Grey Parrot, or “TAG.” The CAG is a bit larger in size and measures in at an average of 12 to 14 inches. They boast cherry red tails and dark, almost black beaks. The Timneh is a touch smaller and is distinguished by its maroon tail and charcoal colored beak.

African Greys are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds, especially when considering their ability to remember scenarios and understand patterns. Some studies suggest that while African Greys are wonderful at talking and mimicking, they are also capable of associating meanings to certain oft-repeated words.

Though affectionate, the African Grey will often have a preference for its primary caregiver and can be a bit shy around strangers or other family members. They make wonderful companions, but are sometimes skittish and aggressive, so they're not recommended for families with younger children.

Like most larger birds, African Greys need a lot of attention and time out of their cage. Three hours a day or more of physical interaction is recommended. Without daily activity, lots of stimulating toys that are rotated often, and engaging play, African Greys are disposed to depression and possibly self-destructive behavior.

Diet should always be varied, with a lot of nuts and fruits, and high in calcium and Vitamin A.

Native to Africa, African Greys have been kept as pets for thousands of years from the Ancient Egyptians to the Romans to today. Presently, it's illegal to trade in wild-caught African Grey Parrots.
