A classic medium-sized dog, the Airedale Terrier makes a wonderful companion and playmate. Airedales are known for possessing a solid balance between independence and loyalty, meaning they love to play and spend time with their owners, but they’re not constantly underfoot or always dropping tennis balls in your lap.
The Airedale Terrier was originally bred to hunt out badgers. Because of this, they have to have the hunting nature of a terrier, but enough toughness to face a formidable foe. Airedales have served as police dogs and war dogs.
Airedales are great choices for multi-animal households. These obedient and strong dogs are known for getting along well with other dogs. As for other species like cats, it’s best to integrate the Airedale at an early age.
Airedales are active and friendly, making them a good fit for families with boisterous kids. Like with all dogs though, it’s important to set clear boundaries and make sure your pet knows its place in the family pack.
The Airedale Terrier’s coat rarely sheds at all is and is always black and tan. Maintaining a full and fancy show coat can be difficult with the Airedale, so most owners prefer to keep the hair neatly clipped on the back, head and neck.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hyperthyroidism, bleeding disorders, and heart disease.
