The Akita’s most defining characteristic is its loyalty. Incredibly devoted and steadfast, the Akita is the embodiment of a dog’s dedication. In Tokyo, there’s a famous statue of an Akita in the Shibuya train station. The inscription reads “Loyal Dog Hachi” and is for an Akita dog named Hachi who sat at the train station night after night waiting for his master, even years after his master died.

Because the Akita is so loyal, it is also protective and can sometimes be aloof to strangers or guests in the house. Despite their dedication, the Akita does not fawn. They are still fiercely independent and were bred for tracking large hunting game. Because of this, the Akita is a dominant and strong animal.

The Akita’s dominant nature also means it’s not necessarily a good fit for households with other pets or smaller animals. The Akita definitely needs a human that can be a real pack leader.

The Akita is part of the working dog group, meaning it likes exercise and activity. If you plan on keeping it as an indoor dog, make sure your Akita gets lots of walks, run, and exercise. As a worker, the Akita is very calm, not skittish and normally not an incessant barker.

Because of their loyal nature and large stature, the Akita makes a great guard dog while their calm demeanor and stoic personality make them a good fit for families with children.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, heart disease, bloat, pemphigus, lupus, hyperthyroidism, and cancer.
