Like the rainforest itself, the Amazon is predominantly green with shockingly beautiful accent colors. They're a large and stocky bird, with their specific species identification normally based on their different color markings.
There are over 30 sub-species of the Amazon Parrot, but the three most popular include the Yellow-Headed Amazon, the Yellow-Naped Amazon, and the Blue-Fronted Amazon.
Often larger in size, the Yellow-Headed Amazon will usually reach 15 to 17 inches in length. Known for their talking abilities, these loud birds are also distinguished by their yellow head markings that are complimented by a touch of red on the tail.
The Yellow-Naped Amazon is known for its simple band of yellow around the nape and hindneck, but it also boasts a dark grey, almost charcoal beak.
Like its name suggests, the Blue-Fronted Amazon will be branded with a blue marking over its dark grey beak. These popular pets are ranked third for their talking skills.
Known for their vocal abilities, the Amazon Parrots are prized pets. However, it's important to remember that these loving birds require a lot of attention. They'll need a fair amount of time out of their cage that includes engaged interaction with you. Amazons love games and will often learn to play peek-a-boo, hide-and-seek, or tug-of-war. Without sufficient stimulation, these stunning birds can become bored or depressed and are prone to self-destructive behavior.
Amazons also love to chew, so keep them happy with chewable and destructible toys. They won't last long in the cage with an active Amazon. That said, Amazons can be a tad possessive, so do not try to remove a favorite toy without first distracting or relocating the bird. They enjoy using their dexterous feet and also like toys that can be picked up. Rumor also has it that Amazons love to splash around in the shower.
The diet should always be varied. Amazons will feed primarily on nuts and fruits supplemented by leafy foods. Never feed a parrot avocado.
Native to South America, Amazons are often bred for pet purposes. Most species are illegal to trade if caught in the wild.
