The American Bobtail is one of the newest recognized breeds in the cat world. Larger than normal, this rare breed can take two to three years to fully develop into an adult cat. These friendly felines are noted for their short tails, which will, on average, range from one to four inches. American Bobtails can be long or shorthair, but they almost always have shaggy coats, tabby markings, and their signature 'hunter eyes'.

American Bobtails are fairly active cats and they enjoy being playful. Typically very friendly, the American Bobtail is known for bonding well with families, particularly children, and is often not adverse to sharing a home with a dog or other household pets. This doesn't mean you should let birds or hamsters out of their cage though - they are, after all, still cats.

Another trait that the American Bobtail is noted for is intelligence. There are numerous stories about these cats learning how to open doors and unlatch hinges. When you combine this with their noted love of shiny things, you could have a real-life 'cat burglar' on your hands.

Though one of the newest recognized breeds, the American Bobtail still has a bit of mystery in its history. Legend has it that the breed was created by crossing a domesticated American tabby with a bobcat. However, the more reasonable idea is that its signature short bobcat tail is most probably the result of a genetic mutation.
