With only a few hundred registered horses in existence, the American Cream Draft is an extremely rare draft horse. Like other working breeds, the American Cream is very tall, but has a short body and sloping shoulders. With its robust and muscular appearance, this horse is clearly built for hard work.

The American Cream is unique because of its creamy white to dark buttermilk coloring not seen in other draft breeds. This breed usually has brown hooves, pink skin, and blue eyes that will change color as the horse matures. It is also the only draft horse breed developed in the United States.

Often used for show horses or as a harness horse, the American Cream Draft makes a wonderful companion and pleasure horse. They combine the strength and stamina of a work horse with a docile and friendly temperament. This gentle giant exudes the slow and plodding personality needed for farm labor, but also wonderful with people.

The breed began in Iowa in 1911. Old Granny, the foundation female, exhibited what is now known as the Champagne gene and gives the Cream Drafts their supple coloring. In the 1930s, breeders began record-keeping and the breed developed. By the 1970s, the breed was almost extinct. The majority of draft horses had been replaced by tractors and vehicles, so the demand had decreased rapidly. The breed is now maintained by a small number of equine enthusiasts.
