The American English Coonhound is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. This means it is not quite recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon.
The Coonhound is world-renowned for its endurance and speed. As a tracking and hunting dog, it’s more than capable with its racy body and athletic shape. They are descended from the English Foxhound and are bred for their vocal howl along with their abilities to track a scent and keep up a chase.
The name “coonhound” comes from the word “raccoon,” which is the animal that the dogs were first used to hunt in the United States. Today, they still work as hunting dogs, but also make great pets. Because of their athletic history, it’s important to provide them with lots of exercise.
Prospective owners should also know that the American English Coonhound was bred for its howl, meaning you’re most likely getting an animal that likes to bail and bark. So, if you like peace and quiet, this may not be the dog for you.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for deafness, spinal degeneration, blood disorders, heart disease, and pancreatitis.
