The darling American Eskimo Dog is best known for its big smile and sparkling white coat. But, these high-energy pups are also independent with a splash of sass.
Despite its small size, the American Eskimo likes to play and absolutely loves the snow. During the summer, you’re likely to find your Eskie snuggled up next to the air conditioner or hiding under the back deck. Because of this, many owners keep outdoor wading pools during the summer.
The American Eskimo Dog can live in a house with children, but tends to prefer adults. These sassy little fellows like to be the center of attention, making them jealous of new babies or small children. The Eskie is also known to lose patience with over-excited children, so both the animal and the child need to be taught careful respect of one another.
When training an American Eskimo Dog, you must be patient and understanding. As puppies they tend to have short attention spans and small bladders, so be ready with the newspaper and lots of rewards. That said, the Eskie is known for its smarts and once it becomes an adult, is a quick learner when it comes to tricks and training. These delightfully energetic dogs are also big chewers, so have lots of chew toys ready and available around the house.
The American Eskimo Dog’s shiny white coat tends to be self-cleaning. The dog is quite adept at keeping itself clean and won’t stand for dried on dirt or mud stains. Another cute physical feature of the Eskie is its tendency to cross its paws when seated.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, epilepsy, diabetes, and heart disease.
