The patient American Foxhound is best known for its calm, loving and protective nature with children. This active and social hound dog makes a great addition to a busy household or a multi-animal family.
Bred for hunting and tracking, the American Foxhound needs a lot of exercise. If kept indoors, you need to make sure this dog gets a lot of vigorous activity. Because the American Foxhound is naturally a pack dog and bred for running with groups, it’s a great animal for multi-dog households. It gets along with other pets as easily as it does with children.
When it comes to training, the American Foxhound loves obedience games that test its sniffing skills and massive amounts of energy. Try playing search and rescue (aka hide and seek) games where you hide a treat somewhere in the house or yard, then show the animal the same treat and get him to sniff the hidden item out. Foxhounds love to learn and they also love to show off their ability in the field.
The Foxhound is a runner, so they’re best kept in a fenced yard. If you want to take your furry friend to the leash-free park, make sure you do so after you’ve both reached a level of obedience and training that insures your dog will come back to you when called.
The American Foxhound will shed, but a weekly brushing with a wet brush will keep the bulk of its hair off of your furniture. The dog can come in any color, but is most often seen in a black, tan and white tricolor coat.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for deafness, spinal degeneration, blood disorders and heart disease.
