Quiet and strong, the American Staffordshire Terrier tends to stray from your typical idea of a terrier (that is, small and loud). The AmStaff, as they are sometimes called, is known for being excellent with kids while simultaneously being a great guard dog.
Despite the fact that American Staffordshire Terriers were once bred for dog fighting and guarding, they are great with kids and very playful. That said, they can sometimes get aggressive with other dogs, so if you’re bringing an American Staffordshire Terrier into a multi-animal family, you should keep an eye out for any playing or games that could turn rowdy.
Like many terriers, the AmStaff can be fairly independent. They love to stick close to their loved ones, but they don’t always want to follow commands and absolutely love to chew. With their strong jaws and powerful teeth, most owners will want to invest in a solid array of durable chew toys and bones.
To keep training interesting for an AmStaff, try to mix it up with games and play time. Their attention spans can be short and they’re very intelligent, so it’s up to the trainer to keep them engaged. Try games like Hide and Seek or Flyball to keep your new AmStaff pup really interested.
The American Staffordshire Terrier is a Bull breed, meaning it’s stout but powerful. Right up until old age, an AmStaff should remain strong, active, muscular and healthy. As for grooming requirements, they are self-grooming and it’s the owner’s choice whether or not to crop the ears.
