Though beloved by its fans, the American Water Spaniel is a rare breed and you may have to travel to find one. The American Water Spaniel is a popular sporting dog and also the breed of choice amongst many bird hunters. It is its natural love of the water and high energy levels that make it a great hunting companion.
Like its cousins, the Curly Coated Retriever and the Irish Water Spaniel, the American Water Spaniel has curly or wavy hair. Unique and rare, this beautiful coat requires a little bit more grooming, but is very useful for outdoor bush work. The marcel coat will repel water and dries fast, letting the dog continue to work in and out of the water.
Aside from its hunting abilities, the AWS is also a spaniel, making it a great fit for families. They get along well with other pets in the house, love to play with children and are happiest when they get to be active.
Because the American Water Spaniel matures slowly, it’s really important to start training young and always be firm. Because of their intelligence and obedient nature, they’ll train quickly but not training them would be like never teaching your children proper manners. It just wouldn’t go well. Like with most active dogs, pick training activities that are high-energy and engaging.
As for grooming, the shedding is light and minimal brushing is required. Just be sure to clean the ears frequently because the AWS is prone to ear infections.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, epilepsy, detached retina, heart disease, cataracts and hyperthyroidism.
