A rare breed, the American Wirehair is defined by its trademark wiry and springy coat. It feels a bit like steel wool and the curlier it is, the better. Only about half of American Wirehair kittens will have wired hair, and how curly it will turn out to be will only be evident after the cat has fully matured. Sometimes, kittens will be born with ringlet-like curls that can straighten out with age.

These round eyed and medium-sized cats are also known for their relaxed and laid back nature. That said, the American Wirehair can have a bit of a bossy streak that will often come out when other animals are present in the house, so make sure you're still the one giving the orders.

These quiet, yet playful cats love games too. By providing toys for them and setting aside time to play with your feline friend, you'll not only keep them happy and engaged, but may just prevent them from bossing around the dog!

Though a rare breed, the Wirehair is distinctly American. Caused by a spontaneous genetic mutation, the first American Wirehair was Adam, a kitten born into a litter from an American Shorthair and a farm cat in upstate New York.
