The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a big dog and like most shepherd dogs, it is very protective of both its territory and its flock. Despite his size though, the Anatolian is fairly ‘chill’ and likes to take it easy whenever possible. And though the Anatolian likes to first warn intruders with barks and growling, it is capable of overtaking an attacker.
When it comes to children, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog tends to treat kids like members of his sheep flock. He’ll supervise play, protect them and try to herd them around the house, but he’s not one to get too involved. Remember, the Anatolian is very protective of its charges, so they can sometimes misinterpret threats like rough play with an older child or parental discipline and act to protect their “sheep.”
Despite its large size, most Anatolians enjoy a long life and few health problems. You should check your dog regularly for any cuts, bruises or sores, but these large guardians are hardy. Bred to handle many weather conditions, the Anatolian is happy both inside and out. If you plan on keeping him as an outdoor dog, make sure you provide shelter from the elements.
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog gets along wonderfully with other animals in the house, treating them as part of the family flock. However, they are not comfortable with strange animals. So, if you’re raising your Anatolian in a suburban setting, try to socialize it from an early age.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for entropy, hyperthyroidism, and heart disease.
