Romantic and striking, the Andalusian is proud and noble in its appearance and its personality. Though their powerful necks are short, the head is still carried high. The voluminous mane and flowing tail give the horse a fairy-tale look, while its high gait gives the Andalusian agility through grace. The Andalusian Horse can come in many colors, but the most common is gray.
As an older breed, Andalusians have established themselves in a number of sports. Their courageous nature makes them easy jumpers while their confident spirit has led to their prominence in the bullring. And their agility and intelligence make them champions at dressage – a form of equine ballet that exhibits training ability as well as movement and how the horse responds to command.
Despite their high-spirits and proud nature, the Andalusian is domesticated, and has been so for centuries. They are very gentle and willing horses who make wonderfully loving companions.
The Andalusian is one of the oldest breeds in the world. In Spain, they are known as 'Pura Raza Espanola,' which translates to 'The Pure Spanish Breed,' and the majority of breeding is still centered in the southern Spanish province of Andalusia. The Spanish Breeders' Association and several other international registries stopped using the Andalusian name. If you're looking for global information or breeders, you may want to search under its Spanish title.
