The Appenzeller Sennenhunde is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it is not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. Appenzeller Sennenhundes can be registered and their lineage tracked, but they are not eligible for championship points or status.
The Appenzeller is one of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds (the Bernese, Entlebucher and Great Swiss Mountain Dog) and it’s very rare. Though smaller than its mountain cousins, the Appenzeller is strong and originally bred to herd and protect dairy cattle.
Their durability, strength, protective instincts and herding capabilities make them a great choice as guard dogs, guide dogs, search and rescue workers and farm dogs. Unfortunately, because the Appenzeller is a fairly rare breed, especially in North America, they have yet to build a solid breed reputation.
The Appenzeller Sennenhunde is a working dog, meaning it likes to stay active and always have a job to do. Playing fetch, training in Fly ball or practicing obstacle courses are all great ways to instill obedience training, get exercise and keep your Appenzeller engaged and healthy.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for heart murmurs, hyperthyroidism, patellar luxation and kidney problems.
