Established and regal, the Arabian is one of the top ten breeds in the world. This noble horse comes in a variety of colors, but always has a black skin – a natural protection against the desert sun. The mane and tail hair is fine and silky, and their large and expressive eyes are often described as 'bright.' The body is compact with a concave back that forces the tail to carry high while the legs are long and slender, exhibiting striking muscle definition.
What makes the Arabian easy to spot is its short head that tapers to a very small and refined muzzle marked by large nostrils. Also, Arabians have a unique bone formation with 17 ribs, 7 lumbar vertebrae, and 16 tail bones (other breeds have a 18-6-18 structure).
The Arabian has a springy, yet airy look to their gait that often gives them an almost floating appearance. This feature, along with their romantic history, has made them a popular breed for casual riders and show disciplines.
However, it is their stamina that has made them truly famous. The Arabian dominates long-distance endurance racing. They are able to withstand incredibly harsh desert conditions and ride for long periods with little water or supplemental feed.
This intelligent and spirited horse is seen as the source of the world's breeds. The first written account of the Arabian pedigree was put down in AD 786, and it covered a history that went as far back as 3000 BC Because of its genetic dominance, purity as a breed, and desirable racing traits, the Arabian has played a part in almost every breed's development – including, most famously, the Thoroughbred's.
