The Ardennais is a classic and noble draft. Their square muzzles, low foreheads, and small, pointy ears give this plodder its trademark 'gentle giant' appearance. The neck is large and powerful, the legs strong and thick, the back broad and short, and the muscular hindquarters remarkably wide and round. This is a horse built for heavy work.
Despite being incredibly powerful, the Ardennais is very gentle and docile. It gets along well with children, and other inexperienced riders or handlers. To put it simply, the Ardennais is a patient and forgiving horse.
Originally, because of its size and suitability for harsh winter climates, this brawny and hardy beast was used as a heavy draft horse. Today, as the need for work horses declines, the Ardennais is often raised for the meat market or for recreational use.
Most likely descended from the prehistoric horses of Europe, the Ardennais is an ancient breed originating in France and Belgium. Historically, they were used a riding and draft horses, but were also major players in France's wars – from the Revolution to the Napoleonic to the First World War, the Ardennais hauled supplies and men to the front lines.
They were crossed with Arabians at the start of the nineteenth century to make the horse a bit livelier and put a spring in its step. However, since demand was high for strong horses able to take a heavy load, whether for agricultural or cart work, the breed eventually found its way back to its original, heavier, plodding style.
