Much like his human counterparts, the Australian Cattle Dog is all about the all or nothing mentality. He likes to commit to a task and go at everything he does full force. Admirably proud and strong-willed, this also means an Australian Cattle Dog needs a take-charge owner, one who is able to assert their “top dog status.”
Usually around puberty, an Australian Cattle Dog will challenge other dogs in the home or even its owner, so it’s important to start early with strong training and lots of socialization with other people and animals.
Despite their herding background, Australian Cattle Dogs are well-suited to a number of tasks from family fun to driving cows to playing football or Frisbee. They’re strong, courageous and absolutely full of energy, so they’re best suited to active owners with lots of room to play.
That said, the AuCaDo, as they’re sometimes called in breeding circles, will try to instinctively herd family members. Children running through their house might soon find an enthusiastic Cattle Dog attempting to herd them into the living room. If this gets to be a problem, there are special toys designed for herding dogs that can keep them well occupied and satisfy that herd-and-conquer need.
The Australian Cattle Dog is a heavy shedder, especially seasonally. Keep loose hairs on the furniture to a minimum with daily brushing and regular bathing.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for glaucoma, lens luxation, heart disease, OCD, and deafness.
