Though the Avelignese is a 'coldblood,' a generic name for the heavy European breeds descended from the prehistoric Forest Horse, it definitely has Arabian genes. This strong work horse is an Italian version of the Haflinger, a sister pony breed that's closely related. Characterized by short legs, and good bones and hooves, the Avelignese is well-suited to mountain work. The Avelignese body is muscular with a broad chest, thick neck, low withers, and a frame built for a harness.

As for decoration, there is a minimal touch of feathering on the lower legs and a generous mane and tail. The general Avelignese appearance may not be striking or regal, but it does have a gentle, strong, and loyal look.

As an exceptional mountain horse, the Avelignese is still used today in agricultural and pack work. Because it's a smaller breed, it's better suited for regions like Italy where the terrain is sometimes tougher, more vertical, or even tighter. Like most breeds, the horse is also used for pleasure riding and recreational use.

The Avelignese's ancestry can be traced back to El Badavi, an infamous Arabian sire. Since its noble beginnings, the Avelignese has always been bred carefully and selectively to ensure the most desirable traits survive.
