The Azawakh is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it is not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. Azawakhs can be registered and their lineage tracked, and as of January 01 2008 they are eligible to participate in all AKC Performance and Companion Events.
Originating in the sub-Saharan countries of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, the Azawakh was bred by Tuareg, Fula and other nomadic tribes of the region. These tribes of nomadic people bred and trained the Azawakh to not only protect, but also hunt and chase game. For this reason, the Azawakh reaches speeds up to 40 mph and is a known, though rare, racing dog breed.
Because of their sight-hound heritage, it’s important to make sure your Azawakh gets a lot of healthy exercise. Their frames are naturally lean and muscular, but these fast runners can put on weight easily. They’re also happiest when they’re active, whether it’s chasing prey and should get at least half an hour a day of hard exercise.
Azawakhs have a strong pack instinct, so they’re happiest in groups. They typically hunt in packs, protect in packs and play in packs. That said, if you’re introducing new dogs into the Azawakh social circle, it’s best to do so from a young age.
The Azawakh is rare in Europe and North America, but interest in the breed is growing. The American Azawakh Association is working hard to spread awareness about the breed as well as increase its numbers. As desert dogs, Azawakhs hate the cold and wet, so may not be a good choice for do owners living in colder climate.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for heart murmurs, hyperthyroidism, Legg-Perthes, patellar luxation and kidney problems.
