The Beagle is fun, easy going and up for anything. Cute and active, they get along well with other pets in the house, love to play with kids and really enjoy the company of other dogs. The Beagle is a pack animal through and through, so they love being social.
If you do have kids though, socialize both your child and the dog from an early age as the Beagle’s pack nature can sometimes make him feel displaced in the family “pack” by a new arrival.
Like most hounds, Beagles are very curious and keen to follow a scent or chase their prey, including cars. So, be careful and keep a watchful eye on your inquisitive loved one. It’s best to keep Beagles in a fenced yard and on-leash. They also love to dig, so fence lines should be reinforced with foliage or cement. Beagles can be very good at finding their own way out of a yard.
Beagles can be stubborn and easily distracted, but they’re often happy to train and love to play games. As their trainer, you’ll have to deal with their curious nature, but it’s easy to quell with a bit of food. Like many hounds, Beagles love food so treats and positive reinforcement are the way to train.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, glaucoma, hypothyroidism, retinal atrophy, intervertebral disk disease and epilepsy.
