Bearded Collies are a remarkably social breed. They love to be surrounded by people and you’ll often find them hanging out by the front door, in the kitchen while you’re cooking or in the living room on a quiet weekend night. Nothing makes a Bearded Collie happier than a good rub and a bit of attention.
That said, a Bearded Collie doesn’t always make the best guard dog. They’re more likely to lick your burglar than tackle him. Easily won over with a smile and a pet behind the ears, the Bearded Collie is a better choice for a home with a lot of visitors.
As a working dog and a herder, Beardies have great stamina and like a good workout. They love playing sports like fetch, fly ball, agility training and especially herding trials. Of course, they also rest as hard as they plan and with a healthy amount of exercise during the day, your Beardie will be more than happy to hang out by your feet that evening.
Its lovable nature and bouncy playfulness makes the Bearded Collie a wonderful choice for families with children. However, because of their size, they can sometimes overwhelm little ones. They don’t mean to do it, but they just get so excited. They’re also accepting of other animals in the house, but may try to herd them around.
The Bearded Collie is a rarer breed and can be a little harder to track down than say, a Labrador Retriever, but it’s well worth the effort. They make a great addition to active families who have a solid sense of humor.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, hypothyroidism, Addison’s Disease, heart disease, epilepsy, autoimmune diseases and subaortic stenosis (SAS).
