Originally bred as a big-game hunter and shepherd, the Beauceron is now a formidable dog known for its athletic ability and herding skills.

Like the more popular German Shepherd, the Beauceron enjoys following commands, completing tasks and setting to work with an attentive master. Their confident nature and forceful appearance also make these majestic dogs fantastic guard dogs. However, they’re not known for being overly aggressive or anxious to bite, which is a nice combination of protection without too much aggression.

The Beauceron is friendly with its family members, but always keeps a watchful eye out. They’re also prone to choosing one favorite family member and tend to stick closest to this person. Often a Beauceron will treat their trainer with deference and respect while sneaking off to see their favorite for a good pet or a little treat.

Beaucerons do fine with other pets in the households, but tend to be overly protective of their territory when it comes to strange dogs in the house or on the property. They do well in apartments or big country estates, but they need regular exercise, lots of people contact and solid training. Remember, the Beauceron loves to learn and lives to obey.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for heart disease or any genetic disorders caused by inbreeding.
