The Belgian Laekenois is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it is not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The American Belgian Laekenois Association (ABLA) is committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

Commonly known as the “Other” Belgian Shepherd Dog, the Lackense or Chien de Berger Belge depending on where you live, the Laekenois is definitely not a Belgian Sheepdog, though they are closely related.<

As a herder, the Belgian Laekenois is hard-working and attentive of its flock. They are loyal and playful, but also love getting down to business. A good Belgian Laekenois likes to have a task to keep it occupied – whether it’s herding the kids, running obedience trials or learning new tricks it is important to keep this intelligent dog stimulated and exercised. A Laekenois, though lovable and devoted, is not the kind of dog that you can just leave in the backyard.

While the Belgian Laekenois can be wonderful of children, it’s also very protective of them. The Laekenois is often stand-offish with strangers and opts for a vigilant observance rather than an exuberant greeting.

Their unique coat of wooly and wiry hair gives Belgian Laekenois dogs a very endearing, almost tousled appearance like they just came from a roll outside or good bout of playing. The coat is easy to keep and requires just a little bit of regular brushing.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for heart murmurs, kidney problems, glaucoma, cataracts patellar luxation and heart disease.
