Like his Belgian breed cousins, the Belgian Tervuren is high energy and very active. Excitable and full of energy, the Tervuren is a great work dog, but for a family pet, the Tervuren works best in a house that’s able to give him lots of exercise and limited access to equally excitable children.

Though a Tervuren will live peacefully in a house with multiple animals, he needs to be brought up in that environment from a young age. The Tervs have a natural hunting instinct as well as a distinctly protective nature over their “turf.” This protective nature also causes them to be a little wary of strangers. Tervs like to stick to one family, or even just one family member and while they love “their people” to bits, they’re not as nice to new guests.

For obedience training and activities, Belgian Tervurens love a challenge. Try trial work, herding activities or obstacle courses to keep your Tervuren interested and engaged. Take it easy in the summer, when the Belgian Tervuren’s thick coat can cause it to overheat.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for elbow dysplasia, heart disease, hypothyroidism, epilepsy and cataracts.

Historically, the breed originated in its native Belgium and was bred for herding and flock protection.
