Distinguished by its characteristically leopard spotted or marbled coat, the Bengal is a very distinct breed. Along with their unique coats, they typically have large, muscular bodies and a sharper, more exotic look about their eyes and ears.
Bengals are known for being very active and therefore interactive. They need a lot of attention and enjoy playing games like fetch or 'hide-and-seek.' Though very social, the Bengal is not usually a lap cat. Also, because of its curious and energetic nature, a Bengal should not be left alone for too long. They have a reputation for being mischievous and living up to their exotic heritage. If you plan on being away from home a lot, you should consider getting two Bengals, or providing another feline companion. Watch out though – the Bengal is known to get jealous.
Though not recognized by more traditional breeding groups like the CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association), the Bengal is a new hybrid breed. It is a cross between an Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic breed, most likely an Abyssinian cross. It's designed to combine the exotic appearance of a wild cat with the sweet and docile nature of a domestic. Back to the Cat Breeds Page
