Bernese Mountain Dogs are true family companions. They love to relax by the TV with their owners, play outside with the kids or spend the day working and training. Basically, the Bernese is a very big dog with an even bigger heart.

Despite their size, the Bernese Mountain Dog is extremely gentle and very patient, even with rambunctious children. Berners, as they’re sometimes called, are often referred to as “nannies” or second moms as they lead toddlers around the house and keep a watchful eye out as the kids play.

Because of its size and endowed coat, the Bernese is capable of living outdoors, but these dogs love human companionship. They were originally bred for work with the family, so their natural temperament is very social. This trait also applies to other animals. Typically, a Bernese Mountain Dog will get along fine with other animals in the house and often enjoy the company of a fellow dog.

When it comes to training, the Bernese Mountain Dog learns quickly and easily. However, they can become bored, so try to mix up your training activities with new and different tricks to keep your Berner engaged and happy. Like most dogs, using positive reinforcement in your training has the best results.

To keep your Berner’s trademark coat looking lush and glossy, give it regular brushings. During the seasonal shedding season, be sure to brush out the undercoat to prevent mats from forming.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for elbow dysplasia, thyroid, mast cell tumors, heart disease, bloat, histiocytosis and glomerulonephritis.

Historically, the Bernese Mountain Dog was a breed of farm dog that originated in the Berne region of Switzerland.
