Though not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, the Bich-Poo is a popular mix breed, combining the intelligence and hypoallergenic coat of the Miniature Poodle with the docile and easy-going nature of the Bichon Frise.
The Bich-Poo has a double coat with a curly outer coat and a soft and silky undercoat. Normally, these dogs are clipped or trimmed and usually require frequent grooming to prevent tangles. Because the Bich-Poo hardly sheds at all, they’re great for allergy sufferers.
From its Bichon Frise ancestry, the Bich-Poo gets an easy going and loving, but undemanding attitude. From the Poodle side, the Bich-Poo gets intelligence and a little more liveliness. Like both ancestor breeds, the Bich-Poo is easy to train, but needs variety and challenge to stay interested. Try adding new tricks on a regular basis, using positive reinforcement and using activities like obstacle courses to keep your Bich-Poo engaged.
Ideally, the Bich-Poo is an indoor companion dog. Like all dogs, they do need regular exercise, but this isn’t a pet that’s made to live outside or spend an entire day hiking in the woods.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for elbow dysplasia, thyroid, mast cell tumors, heart disease, bloat, histiocytosis and glomerulonephritis.
