The Birman is a beautiful cat, both in appearance and temperament. They are distinguished by their light colored coats which are contrasted by dark points (that is, legs, face and tail) and white paws. Though born a solid shade, the Birman will develop its colors over several weeks. They almost always have blue eyes, smaller ears, and a larger and somewhat stocky body.

The Birman has been bred for generations as a companion, and therefore, makes a wonderful domestic cat. They can become very attached to their owners, showing a genuine affinity towards them. However, they will often maintain some form of independence and, like most cats, are very curious and playful. Birmans are also known to get along well with other animals in the house and adapt easily to new faces.

The Birman cat originated in Burma and Thailand and there is a legend about its sacred origins. Sinh, the first Birman, was a beautiful cat owned by the Priest Mun-Ha and one of the guardians of the Temple of Lao Tsun. One day, the Mun-Ha was killed in an attack and Sinh put his feet on his master. The cats legs turned brown like the Earth, his eyes blue, and where his feet touched the priest turned pure white.
