The Black and Tan Coonhound, like its fellow Coonhound cousins, is an all-American breed, originally developed in the United States from its scent hound ancestors.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is not only bred for its ability as a scent hound, but also its laid back attitude and easy going nature. Nonchalant and mellow, the Black and Tan Coonhound is quick to accept visitors, other dogs, children and guests.
Originally bred to track down, hunt and tree raccoons, the Black and Tan Coonhound will also smell out deer, cats (big and small), small game and even bears. Their urge to follow a scent means you should make sure you keep your Coonhound in a well-fenced yard and away from your easily frightened house cats.
As a family pet, the Coonhound fits in well with the kids and isn’t too demanding. They love to take it easy on the couch, but are also happy going for a walk or having a little fun. Also, while the Coonhound isn’t naturally aggressive, they will bark in case of danger and will protect if pressed.
When it comes to training, it’s all about keeping it up. Just like we have to exercise our minds to keep them sharp, the same can be said for a Black and Tan Coonhound. While they love to train, it needs to be done consistently, with high energy and on an ongoing basis.
The Black and Tan Coonhound requires minimal grooming. Beyond the basics of the occasional bath and a regular nail trimming, the only grooming a coonhound really needs is a weekly cleaning of their long and droopy ears. Because the ears hang, they can sometimes be susceptible to infection and odor, so it’s important for owners to stay on top of them.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, ectropion, heart disease, bleeding disorders and progressive retinal atrophy.
