The Black Russian Terrier makes an excellent family dog. The Russian loves to be amongst its family members and is a real people lover.

As a terrier, the Black Russian loves to follow his nose and sniff out its territory as well as dig. They can also be a little stubborn, but are also generally quite trainable and very intelligent.

When it comes to other animals in the house, the Black Russian Terrier will tolerate them, but they like to be the dominant dog and can sometimes get jealous of other pets or small children who might be getting more attention than them.

Though strong, the Black Russian Terrier is not suited for outdoor living and some are known for having strong food allergies or problems with digestion. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your Black Russian Terrier’s diet as well as any potential stomach or intestinal issues.

Because of their beautiful, glossy and thick coat, the Black Russian Terrier cuts a stunning figure. However, they should be brushed regularly to prevent matting, tangling and shedding. They should also be trimmed, including their infamous bangs, at least once every two months.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for elbow dysplasia, heart disease, allergies and progressive retinal atrophy.

Historically, the Black Russian Terrier was bred in Russia as a military and working dog. Breeding stock was brought into the former U.S.S.R. and the breed is largely the result of a structured and monitored breeding program. The dog was originally bred for its ability to train and work, rather than its appearance.
