My best friend and I have a slightly different Thanksgiving Day ritual! Before a big dinner with our families we get together to watch the Purina National Dog Show on NBC. For some reason we love to watch these dogs strut their stuff!!
Its fun to see prime examples of the best of a dog breed, as well discovering breeds which are new to us.

A good friend came to me this morning for advice on how to housebreak the new puppy she got her son. “Crating” has always been very effect for me for this task as it uses the very instincts which dogs have.
To train your new pup to use the great outdoors as opposed to your rug with the crate method you provide a “den” for the animal when you cannot watch over him. I always have used an oversize plastic airline type animal crate. These are secure and when outfitted with a blanket and some essentials it creates a safe, secure environment for your new friend.
Dogs do not like to soil the area in which they sleep, and by keeping your puppy in a crate while you are away at work or sleeping yourself, you are using this instinct to your advantage. For this to be effect though always remember to make going outside the first priority before going into and coming out of the crate, and don’t forget the lavish praise when the business is done where it is supposed to be. If at all possible keep the puppy from having accidents in your floor whenever roaming free and very soon he will understand that outside is the place for such things. Not in his crate and definitely not in yours!
When I was younger I thought putting a puppy in a box was mean, but now I understand that dogs are actually happy when they have a den, and if not given one will actually create a place for this on their own. Though if crating is misused it can be a cruelty for your pet. Dogs should never be placed in a crate at all times. Growing puppies need play and exercise to grow up healthy and strong, so always remember to spend a good amount of time with your new pal for your health as well as his!
