“Stay” is a more difficult command for a puppy to learn just because he wants to be with you his best friend and he does not want to watch you walk away.

As usual start him sitting on your left side with the leash loosely in your right hand. Start off by saying “stay” in a quiet but commanding tone, while you place your left hand in front of his nose without touching it. Then step out from the puppy using your right foot first. Take a few tiny steps in this direction, then turn to face the dog. If he stays for a few seconds then return by walking by the puppy’s left side to circle to your original position. Give him lots of praise for staying on command as you walked away.

This is an exercise in control, so take the time to be calm and deliberate in your voice and movements. If the puppy follows you or lies down, quickly correct him with a sharp jerk on the leash along with a “No!” At first your puppy will move, but with patience on your part he will eventually understand you are want him to stay seated where he is. You will know when you are at this point, and at that time gradually increase the distance until you are out as far as the leash will allow. To increase the distance further, add some rope to the end of the leash to get more distance. Eventually work your way into another room out of the site of the puppy, and increase the time away with each trip. Always go back to the puppy and praise him and let the pup know you are so proud that he stayed seated where he was while you were gone.

After your puppy masters the “sit” command the next logical step is the “heel” command. Some dog trainers prefer to train these two commands at the same time, but for the average joe one at a time is plenty.

Have your puppy use his new found “sit” command to sit next to your left side, with the leash gathered loosely in your right hand. With your left hand give the leash a quick snap while saying “heel, and stepping forward with your left foot. All 3 of these things MUST be done at the same time!!When you puppy walks with you at your heel, praise him to show that you are happy with his performance. When the puppy goes too far forward, slow down a bit, while giving the leash a slight snap with the left hand along with a “heel” command. When your pup lags behind, use the same motions but with a forward snap on the leash. Your puppy will quickly learn the best place to be is right by your left side.

When practicing this command stop and start frequently using the “sit” command at the end of each walk, and a “heel” command to start the walk. Always start with your left foot, and slowly work up to more and more crowded situations such as the park to learn to tune out distractions. If your puppy has really mastered these commands no distraction will interfere with the performance of “sit” & “stay”.

“Sit” is the first, and one of the simplest of the basic commands to teach your puppy.

Place your puppy on your left side, the leash gathered in your right hand so that you have a grip fairly close to the collar. Say “sit” while you push down the hindquarters with your left hand while you pull up on the leash with your hand. Pulling up on the leash will keep the puppy’s head raised so that it cannot lie down. Hold your left hand pressue on the rump for a couple of seconds, so that the pup doesn’t jump up before the lesson is learned. Praise the puppy with a “good dog” and a small training biscuit.

Repeat these steps many times, until you feel the puppy has the idea. Then continue more, but stop pressing the rear down and see if the puppy can do this with only the leash guidance. Once that is mastered progress to using the command alone, and no guidance at all. Remember to always praise the puppy with plenty of positive reinforcement whenever he performs the command properly. In no time your puppy will know how to sit on your command!

If you own a dog or puppy, at one time or another you will probably have to deal with worms. Worms are an internal parasite, which can occur in dogs at any age, with puppies being especially prone to them. An infestation is not hard to control, unless it is left untreated for far too long.

The only way to be sure if your dog has worms or not is to take a stool sample to your vet. If the parasite is found he will prescribe the proper medication to fix the problem. At no time should you try to self-diagnose and self-medicate to treat worms in your dog. In many cases home remedies only aggravate the situation and they do not fix the problem.

Whenever you get a new puppy it is very important to get the dog inoculated for some common canine ailments to ensure good health and a long life. These inoculations include, but are not limited to:

Distemper – This is a highly contagious viral disease that attacks the infected dog’s tissues.

Hepatitis – This is another very infectious virus which attacks the liver and gastrointestinal tracts of the infected animal.

Leptospirosis – Very similar to hepatitis in appearance this disease also infects the kidneys and liver of the animal.

Canine Parvovirus – Virus spread through contact, which appears very similar to feline distemper and comes in two forms cardiac and intestinal.
