The Bluetick Coonhound is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it is not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The American Bluetick Coonhound Association (ABCA) is committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.
Patient and docile, the typical Bluetick Coonhound usually likes to take it easy. That is, until they catch an interesting scent. Like their hound cousins, Bluetick Coonhounds love to follow their noses, so it’s important to keep this curious breed on the leash or in a securely fenced yard.
Originally bred for hunting and tracking, as well as their trademark blue coats, the Bluetick Coonhound is an active dog and should get a healthy amount of daily exercise. These dogs like to nap, but they also need daily runs and a lot of vigorous activity.
Because the Bluetick Coonhound descends from foxhounds, it’s a natural pack dog and usually fits in well in multi-animal households as well as getting along well with children.
When it comes to training, the Bluetick Coonhound does well with obedience trials and activities that test its sniffing abilities. Try hide and seek style of activities to keep your Bluetick Coonhound engaged and interested. For grooming, the Bluetick Coonhound does shed, but weekly brushing will keep stray hairs at bay and your couch in good condition.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, ectropion, heart disease, bleeding disorders and progressive retinal atrophy.
Historically, the breed originated in Louisiana and is believed to have been bred from English foxhounds, French hounds and cur dogs. The breed is recognized by the United Kennel Club, the Australian National Kennel Club and the New Zealand Kennel Club.
