Depending on what you have planned for the day, your Border Terrier is happy to laze about on the couch or tackle a 10-mile trail run. Active, yet not overly hyper, the Border Terrier is a great fit for someone who likes to take long walks during the day followed by relaxing evenings by the fire.
Like most terriers, the Border is intelligent, playful and athletic. But, unlike many members of the terrier breed group, they’re not known for being overly dominant, aggressive or territorial. The one major drawback to this people-friendly and versatile breed is its resounding bark, which is quite loud and can sometimes be an annoyance.
Border Terriers love to play with the kids, but should b socialized from a young age. An older Border won’t intentionally harm a child, but if they’re not used to children, their playful nature can sometimes be too rough. Because the Border Terrier was originally bred to run with fox hounds, they’re also quite social with other animals and dogs in the house, and will fit in well to a pack situation.
When it comes to trainers, Border Terriers are quick learners. They’re even faster when there’s a treat reward to be had. Rotate your activities and keep the training new and engaging in order to keep your Border interested. Like most Terriers, they can get bored with repetitive tasks and sometimes prefer to seek out their own pesky fun.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for Legg Perthes, patellar luxation, hart disease, hypothyroidism, autoimmune problems, seizures, heart murmurs and progressive retinal atrophy.
Historically, the breed was originally bred in the border region between England and Scotland and was bred for the purpose of hunting vermin like rats and mice.
