Born for the chase, a healthy Borzoi needs room to run and an owner that will give him lots of exercise. That said, if you’re a city dweller, the elegant Borzoi may still be a great fit. The Borzoi is quiet and reserved, often bottling its energy until you’re ready to take it for a good dose of daily exercise.
If you properly care for and regularly exercise your Borzoi, you’ll find they make wonderful and undemanding pets. Beautiful and unique, the Borzoi boasts its Russian ancestry with a double fur coat and long racing legs. For grooming, it’s best to brush them regularly, particularly during shedding season. Because of their heavy coat, the Borzoi is not a fan of the heat and loves getting hosed down or going for a romp in the pool on a hot summer’s day.
When it comes to training, opt for positive reinforcement and gentle reprimands. Unlike a German Shepherd, the Borzoi is not a breed that enjoys being yelled at. They’ll shy away instantly and usually become unresponsive. However, with a kind and patient owner, these intelligent dogs respond quickly and easily to training.
Like most hounds, a Borzoi shouldn’t be let off its leash or let loose outside of a fenced yard. They’re liable to pick up an interesting scent and bolt off to chase it down, putting the dog at risk to get lost or hit by a moving vehicle.
With its characteristic deep chest, the dog can sometimes be extra sensitive to food, indigestion and bloat. Try splitting your Borzoi’s feedings into twice daily increments as well as avoiding major exercise before and after eating. Like humans, a Borzoi usually can’t scarf down a full dinner and then go for a run.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, cataracts, heart problems, retinopathy, bloat, and bone cancer.
Historically, the Borzoi is believed to have originally developed in the lower Kazakhstan region of Altai and the plains of Afghanistan. Popular with the tsars of Russia, the Borzoi breed has long held a regal place in Russian history.
