Friendly and personable, the Boston Terrier is one of the most popular breeds ever developed in the United States. Trusting and happy-go-lucky, these little firecrackers are loving and eager to play.

The Boston Terrier is a smart breed, perhaps too smart. Training can take some time as owners may have to convince the dog that he’s the one doing the training. They like a challenge, but they also like to do things “their way.” Be prepared for a bit of a power struggle and make sure your Boston Terrier doesn’t trick you into thinking you’re the boss.

Though they have lots of energy, the tiny Boston Terrier is happy in a small home, as long as they have access to a yard or a daily walk to get some regular exercise. Ideally, a Boston Terrier is happiest with a lot of attention, a bit of exercise and plenty of hours spent being rubbed and pet.

For multi-animal houses, a Boston Terrier usually fits in well with other animals, especially if socialized from an early age.

When it comes to grooming, their short coat is very easy to maintain, but also means they don’t like the cold. If you’re going for walks on a cold, New York night, wrap your little one up in a doggie sweater. Aside from that, regular baths and occasional nail clippings are all your little Boston Terrier needs.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, deafness, heart anomalies, epilepsy and cataracts.

Historically, the Boston Terrier breed originated in 1870 in Boston, MA and is descended from an Old English Bulldog and the English White Terrier.
