A natural leader and protector, the herding background of the Bouvier breed means this dog is perfect for owners who are confident enough to assert their dominance from an early age. The Bouvier des Flandres is a fast learner who is willing to work, but needs regular exercise, a fun job and lots of tasty treats.
Because the Bouvier was originally bred to guard and herd livestock, they love to play and romp. However, they can sometimes be overly protective of children or too rambunctious with them. Like with most dogs, when you first introduce a Bouvier to a child, you should be there to supervise their play at the beginning.
Apparently, this fun and active breed is also known for being a somewhat unruly teenager. Just like humans, many dogs have an adolescence period where they’re prone to act out and be a little mischievous. Take these growing pains with a grain of salt and you’ll both get through them a lot more easily.
When it comes to grooming, owners should ward off mats by combing their Bouvier’s coat about two times a week, including the legs and face. Because the Bouvier’s coat is so thick and heavy, it doesn’t do well in hot climates and prefers to spend the hottest part of the day in a patch of shade or huddled over the air conditioning vents.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, hypothyroidism, torsion, laryngeal paralysis, cancerous tumors, glaucoma and heart disease.
Historically, this breed originated in Flanders and was originally bred for farm work.
