The Boykin Spaniel was, for a long time, a FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it was not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but was rather, in review. As of January 01, 2008, the Boykin Spaniel was approved to become a member breed of the AKC’s Miscellaneous Group. The Boykin Spaniel Society and the Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.
First bred for hunting and bird retrieval, the Boykin Spaniel loves to play fetch, though it’s still a fantastic breed for hunting and water work. Because of their compact size, the Boykin fits easily on a small boat and is always at the ready to fetch its owner’s latest prize.
As a sporting breed, the Boykin adjusts well to family life, but needs a healthy amount of daily exercise and lots of play. When it comes to training, the Boykin Spaniel is happiest with task-oriented work that’s rewarded with a tasty treat or a kind word. Most obedience trainers find that the Boykin excels at trial work and fly ball, which combines the dog’s athletic ability with its love of catching and retrieving.
For grooming, the Boykin Spaniel requires weekly brushing to prevent its silky coat from matting. Regular nail clippings, bathing and ear inspections also go a long way in keeping your Boykin healthy and happy.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, cardiomyopathy, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation and hypothyroidism.
Historically, the breed originated in South Carolina in the early 20th century. It was first professionally bred by a Mr. Whit Boykin, which is where this hunting breed got its name.
