The Braco Italiano is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it is not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The North American Braco Italiano Club is committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

A rare and ancient breed, the Braco Italiano is a classic gun dog – originally bred to hunt, point and retrieve a fallen prey. As a working dog, the Braco Italiano loves to learn and enjoys spending time with its human companions. They’re not suited for a life spent along in the backyard and get along best with owners who are willing to give them lots of love and a healthy dose of daily exercise.

Typically, the Braco Italiano is a calm and docile breed, not known for aggressive outbursts. Rather, they prefer to go about their business and get their tasks done. A Braco likes to have a job and a purpose, so training your Braco Italiano to fetch the paper

When it’s a puppy, your Braco Italiano will chew anything and everything, so be prepared with crate training or a ready supply of chew toys and other chewable distractions.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, cardiomyopathy, cancerous tumors, colitis and hypothyroidism.

Historically, the Braco Italiano is only one of two native Italian gun dogs. As a hunter, pointer and retriever, the Braco Italiano is an ancient breed that’s believed to go as far back as the 4th and 5th centuries B.C.
