Briards are unique for their ability to be just as happy spending a day relaxing on the couch or going for a long, 10-mile trail run. The Briard loves to play, but they’re easygoing enough to enjoy just relaxing with you inside.

If you’re bringing a Briard into a multi-animal house or a home with children, start the socialization process from a young age. Growing up with other animals and children, the Briard will shower them with love and affection. Because of their protective herder’s instinct, you may catch your Briard trying to herd the kids around the house. Parents should also be mindful if children are roughhousing, especially with strangers, as the Briard’s protective instinct can be very strong.

The Briard has a strong protection instinct and while this makes it a suitable guard dog, it’s important to be aware of situations or scenarios that could be perceived as threats by your dogs. For example, a new boyfriend’s playful tickle attempts could be thwarted by an overly protective Briard intent on “saving” you.

Briards learn quickly and easily, but they respond best to positive reinforcement and reward-based training. A heavy hand or a scolding yell won’t get results with a Briard and they’re likely to hold a grudge.

When it comes to grooming, Briards should be brushed weekly with puppies being brushed daily. One trademark of the breed is to have the double rear paws declawed.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, retinal degeneration, bloat, eye anomalies and hypothyroidism.

Historically, this proud dog was used as sentry for the French army and is an ancient sheep dog renowned for its protective abilities.
