One of the oldest English breeds, the British Shorthair is a distinguished and prominent feline. Characterized by their short, but very plush coats, petting the British Shorthair is nothing short of total indulgence. They also often boast big copper eyes, somewhat chubby cheeks, and large, round heads. They can be a bit on the heavy side, but don't tell them that.
The British Shorthair is very easygoing, and well suited to apartment or indoor living. They're not normally very demanding, but will inform you when they're interested in a bit of play. They're also known for their intelligence, and when combined with their laid back style, you can see why the British Shorthair is a favorite amongst professional trainers.
Because the British Shorthair is a touch heavier than most cats, and can be prone to obesity, it's important to keep an eye on their diets. They like to be closer to the ground and aren't big on acrobatics. Though they may not be as agile or graceful as other breeds, the British Shorthair certainly makes up for it with their regal nature.
Legend has it that the British Shorthair is the result of a chance pairing between an alley cat and a domestic breed, but the more likely origin is that the cat came to Britain with the Romans in the 2nd century.
