The Brittany is a dog that loves to work for its owner. They enjoy playing, participating in family activities and generally getting in the middle of things. Their high energy and spotlight-seeking behavior doesn’t always make them a great fit for elderly owners or tiny apartment dwellers, but Brittanys thrive with space and a fun-loving family.
As a sporting dog, the Brittany was bred for energy and endurance. This means owners should be ready to run and exercise their Brittany on a regular basis, treating them to regular jogs and a lot of playing with the Frisbee.
A penned up Brittany can be a dangerous thing and without a suitable release for their energy, these intelligent dogs can get into all sorts of trouble. If you’re having problems with their Brittany being too hyperactive, up its exercise level and let it romp outside for at least an hour or two a day.
As happy and go-lucky as the Brittany can be, they’re sometimes shy around strangers. That said, these dogs bond very closely with their trainers. As work dogs, they naturally cling to their trainer and worker. So, if you’re looking for an outlet for your Brittany’s high energy, obedience trials can be a great way to bond and train.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for glaucoma, heart and liver problems, seizures, spinal paralysis and heart disease.
Historically, the Brittany originated in the Brittany province of France during the 1800s. The dog was originally bred as a gun dog and for bird hunting and retrieving.
