After the Australian Gold Rush, many horses escaped and ran wild. These feral herds became known as Brumbies. The Brumby is a small to medium sized horse known for its agility and quickness that has, along with its hard hooves and strong legs, been developed over decades of outback living.

After years of unregulated breeding, the body shape is poor and unrefined. The Brumby is a wild horse, and has not been developed as a breed. There are no selective breeding programs or official registries to oversee the growth of this horse.

The Brumby has a strong survival instinct and lives in herds. Though they can be caught and made docile, there is almost no demand for domesticated or tamed Brumbies, and they are sometimes even seen as pests, particularly by farmers and ranchers who see the Brumby as competition for their grazing cattle.

Despite massive past culling exercises, the Brumby still survives today as a feral horse.
