Though definitely a lap dog through and through, the sparky Brussels Griffon is always happy to join their owner on a walk or a trip to the dog park. These little skippers enjoy a good nap as well as a healthy amount of exercise.
Like a cat, the Brussels Griffon loves to climb and can often be found perched on the back of the couch or up on a ledge. Able to climb over baby gates and make their way through barriers, the best way to keep a Brussels Griffon out of somewhere is through training or a strong door.
When it comes to training, the bright-eyed Brussels Griffon learns quickly and easily. These smart, little dogs enjoy obedience work and really thrive under positive reinforcement. Kind words and treat rewards work much better than a harsh scolding, so keep your tone happy and training fun in order to keep your Brussels Griffon engaged.
For show purposes, the Griffons’ ears can be cropped or left naturally folded. Their coat is normally cared for and brushed like a terriers, but comes in two types – a rough and a smooth. Brussels Griffons typically come in red, beige, black and tan and black.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy and patellar luxation.
Historically, the Brussels Griffon was bred in Belgium as a small dog that was capable of fighting off vermin. The breed quickly caught on and became popular with nobility and, subsequently, European breeders.
