They may seem tough, but Bull Terriers are really just playful rascals at heart. Bursting with energy, these dogs love to rip through the house, clown around with their owners, skid around on the hardwood floors and generally have lots of fun.
Because of their high energy and their tenacity to chew, it’s recommended that Bull Terriers are crate trained as puppies. For owners that value their furniture and can’t supervise their new puppy 24-hours a day, this is usually the best method.
Bull Terriers are known for really loving their owners and being very attached. These dogs like to go for rides, follow their owners from room to room, sit on your lap and yes, climb into your bed at night. Bull Terriers also probably win the doggie award for most enthusiastic greeting when their owners come home.
As a terrier, Bullies, as their sometimes called, can be stubborn. When it comes to training, a firm hand is needed as well as the ability to let your Bull Terrier know who really the alpha leader of the house is. The ability to discipline with calmness and fairness is probably a Bull Terrier owner’s best asset.
For training, opt for shorter obedience sessions. Intersperse these with exercise and fun with the ball to keep your Bull Terrier engaged and actively involved.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for lens luxation, patellar luxation, deafness, heart defects and renal cortical hypoplasia.
