As the historic, but unofficial mascot of the United States Marine Corps, Bulldogs personify the bravery and determination of their human counterparts. Of course, they’re also champion nappers.

The bulldog may seem rough and a little scary, but they actually love a good snuggle, a tasty treat and a belly rub more than anything else. In return for biscuits and pats, Bulldogs will give you unwavering love and devotion.

Bulldogs are great with families and kids, but they can often get underfoot. The Bulldog takes the term “companion” to heart and loves to follow you or the kids around the house while you do the dishes, finish homework or try to read the newspaper. Despite their tendency to nap most of the day, if you’re looking for a dog with a cat-like persona, the Bulldog isn’t it.

Along with their devotion, the bulldog can be downright stubborn. If he doesn’t want to perform a trick or go for a walk, he simply won’t and there’s very little that you can do about it. Professional trainers suggest using positive reinforcement like food treats and to try training exercises that aren’t too repetitive.

When it comes to grooming, regular brushing will keep shedding to a minimum. Be sure to clean under the skin folds around the dog’s nose and tail.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, heart disease, entropion, ectropion, elongated palate, heart defects, cherry eye, stenotic nares, small trachea, hypothyroidism, and inverted or recessed tails.

The term “bulldog” was first used in the 16th century, with The Bulldog Club of England forming in 1875. Tenacious in nature, the Bulldog is also a popular mascot for university and college sports teams.
