Traditionally, the Bullmastiffs were bred to stop poachers. Breeders looked for strength and speed over short distances. Because of their background, the Bullmastiff is a powerful, but undemanding dog. They love to play, but they’re also happy to spend the afternoon lounging around the house with you.
Bred for guard work, the Bullmastiff has a strong protective instinct, particularly with family members. If there are strangers or new children in the house, parents should be watchful over any rambunctious activity as the Bullmastiff can sometimes misinterpret play for aggression. Typically though, they’re great with kids, particularly when raised with them from a young age.
Bullmastiffs do great in multi-animal households, but they need to be socialized early on. Typically, an older Bullmastiff with an established territory doesn’t like strangers on his “turf.”
When it comes to training, Bullmastiffs love task-oriented work. They’re great at hunting, tracking and search and rescue. So, try games like hide-and-seek to keep your Bullmastiff engaged. Basically, they like work that has a purpose.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for elbow dysplasia, heart disease, hip dysplasia, bloat, torsion and progressive retinal atrophy.
